Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that are more extensive than dental fillings but less so than caps and crowns. They are typically formed in a dental lab and are made of gold, porcelain or resin depending on the patient’s needs and aesthetic goals. An inlay refers to a restoration that is formed to fit the center of a tooth, whereas an onlay refers to a restoration that encompasses at least, one cusp of the tooth. Both inlays and onlays are bonded to the surface of damaged teeth and matched to the color of the surrounding teeth.
Did you know?
Trying to figure out if you need an inlay or an onlay? We’ve got you covered with a simple guide!
Inlays are used when the damage or decay is confined within the cusps (the raised points) of the tooth. They fit into the prepared area of the tooth, like a puzzle piece.
Onlays, sometimes called partial crowns, are used when the damage extends to one or more of the cusps of the tooth or the chewing surface. They cover more surface area than inlays, extending over the cusps and sometimes down the side of the tooth.
Diagnosis and Treatment
1
During your initial visit, Dr. Kutsikovich will examine your teeth to determine if inlays or onlays are suitable for your dental needs. These restorations are typically used to repair teeth with moderate damage or decay.
2
If deemed appropriate, the next step involves preparing the affected tooth. This may involve removing any decayed or damaged portions and shaping the tooth to accommodate the inlay or onlay.
3
Once the tooth is prepared, a precise impression of the tooth is taken. This impression is used to create a custom-fitted inlay or onlay that will perfectly match the shape and size of your tooth.
4
While your custom restoration is being fabricated, a temporary filling or restoration may be placed to protect the tooth.
5
Once the custom inlay or onlay is ready, usually in a subsequent visit, it is carefully placed and bonded to the tooth by Dr. Kutsikovich. The fit and alignment are checked to ensure proper function and aesthetics.
6
Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure the inlay or onlay fits comfortably and functions correctly within your bite.
7
Finally, the restoration is polished to match the sheen of your natural teeth, providing a seamless and natural appearance.
